Butler City Council is considering amending the 2018 budget and re-raising a tax that was supposed to be decreasing this year.
Council voted in December to adopt a budget that reduced the city’s streetlight tax by 1 mil, meaning the average city homeowner would pay about $8 less.
But, after discussion by the newly-seated council during a special finance meeting Monday night, the streetlight tax may be amended back to where it was in 2017. Officials say that would allow for some city streetlights to be repaired or replaced.
Other financial matters were discussed at Monday’s special Butler City Council meeting.
One of the topics was what to do about the Butler City Fire Department’s broken aerial ladder truck. No specific details on if the city plans to repair or buy a new truck were made, but it was mentioned that a possible solution could lie in utilizing an option presented by the surrounding communities. No further information was released.
Overtime costs in the city police and fire departments were also discussed.
After new council members were sworn-in earlier this month, the board voted to re-open this year’s budget. Any action to modify the 2018 numbers would need to be done before mid-February.
