Butler City Council has rejected the Conditional Use request made by The ARC of Butler County for the former Broad Street Elementary School.
At the conclusion of an hour long public hearing, City Council voted by a 3-2 margin to deny the ARC’s proposed use of the building in a residential area for a non-profit philanthropic workshop and administrative offices.
Several representatives of the ARC attended the meeting to explain about their plans for the property. At least a dozen residents of the area around the school also attended and voiced their concerns. The City Planning Commisison recommended approval of the request with conditions. In the end, it came down to concerns about a playground cut for parking and a lack of tax contribution to the city.
“What’s your plans for the neighborhood kids down there that are used to using that playground? It’s still a concern of the neighbors and these people live in the city, they pay taxes in the city, but you don’t pay taxes, and that’s a large piece of property that could become taxable,” said Butler City Mayor Tom Donaldson as he addressed ARC representatives.
It is not known at this time how this decision will affect a planned hearing before a judge November 30th on the sale of the property by the Butler Area School District to the ARC of Butler County.
