The city of Butler anticipates likely having to raise their tax millage rate for 2016.
At their agenda setting meeting Tuesday night, Butler City Council discussed voting on a 3 mill increase during their regular meeting on Thursday. This amount can be revised down before final adoption in December but it is much more difficult to increase a smaller initial proposed increase.
A 3 mill increase would collect an estimated $190,000 in additional revenue for the city. The additional money would be used for streetlights, leasing two new police cars, and buying a much needed truck for the parks and streets departments. The total general fund budget is expected to increase by over $300,000 in 2016.
For the second consecutive year, there is no money in the city budget for a 4th of July fireworks display. The city is accepting donations as they did last year with a target amount of $11,000 to $15,000 for a similar show.
