The Butler Area School District will not be selling any buildings in the near future.
By a 6-2 margin the new school board rescinded the agreement that they approved last month to sell the former Broad Street Elementary school building. Board members Neil Convery and Al Vavro voted against the motion to cancel the sale. Board member David Korn was not present. An agreement had been in place with the ARC of Butler County to sell the property for $475,000.
The agreement did have a provision that allowed for the board to cancel the sale before the December 22nd court hearing to determine which bidder would be awarded the property. Other bidders also made offers for the facility including J.M. Beatty Furniture who increased their bid to $530,000. A meeting was held at Broad Street last week where community members expressed concern particularly about the closing of the playground at the facility.
New board members do not have plans to reverse the district’s recent consolidation; instead they maintain that they would like to see the data that proves the process has been successful before deciding to sell any buildings. The issue of selling buildings is expected to be revisited in January or February.
