Although nothing was finalized at a Tuesday school board meeting, the Butler Area School District is looking into revising their drug and alcohol policy.
“Research shows again and again that putting kids in long-term susupesions for drug and alcohol actually puts them further behind and sometimes doesn’t help with the drug and alcohol problem itself,” Dr. Brian White, superintendent o the Butler Area School District said.
White said talks about changes to the policy are in a very preliminary stage, and that discussions are still ongoing as to what that policy could look like.
However, White said making sure students get the education they need is at the forefront of any policy change.
“When a student is out for over 10 days consecutively, it is really often hard for them to recover academically,” White said. “So we’re trying to look at alternatives and how we can do things differently to minimize the impact on education, but still address the core issues that need addressed.”
