A local organization is planning a major project to benefit the kids and the city of Butler.
Butler City Councilman Jeff Smith informed the rest of Butler City Council during a meeting on Tuesday that he recently met with Butler AM Rotary about a two-year project they are planning which involves replacing the playground equipment at Butler Memorial Park.
Through fundraising, the group plans to collect roughly $100,000 to renovate the playground area by Miller Shelter. Some of the equipment currently in that location could be repurposed for use in other city playgrounds, according to Smith. The new area would be known as Rotary Playground and the first phase of the project could be complete by September.
As part of an agreement with the city, the AM Rotary has also pledged to support their gift through clean-up days and periodic maintenance. A fund will also be set up to collect annual contributions from the AM Rotary that will be used for long-term care of the equipment. In the past, the city has been responsible for ongoing upkeep of equipment that has been donated.
