The Butler County Prison has entered into an agreement with another county in the state to accept additional prisoners.
Commissioners approved the deal with Potter County at their meeting yesterday.
The agreement says the county will receive $60 per day from Potter County to house their prisoners. This is the same rate the county currently gets from the four other counties that send inmates to Butler.
Butler County officials say that Potter County has a relatively small prison, holding only 75 inmates total, and that their prison was not suited to house long-term female prisoners.
Butler County’s prison is currently housing nearly 430 prisoners—which is around 70 to 75 percent capacity according to officials.
The warden of the prison has the right to refuse any prisoners that other counties are looking to transfer.
