The Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau has created a Sports Commission.
Bureau President Jack Cohen told our newsroom “We really believed that it was something we needed to develop to help us when we go out to attract these folks that we have people that can talk the language of a certain sport because they’ve grown up in it, they still work in it and they’re respected athletes or respected people in that particular sport.”
The new board met for the first time Wednesday and will continue to meet as needed in order to act as ambassadors for sports in Butler County.
The eight or nine handpicked committee members include directors of athletics for area schools, administrators at the Lemieux Hockey Center, coaches, and athletes who live in the area like former Pirate Sid Bream.
“Each of these people were handpicked not only because of their ability but how they fit into our community. They are very strong and independent people that people look to and respect for their knowledge of their sport and also the way they carry themselves through life. They are all leaders and that’s what we want to show off our community,” Cohen explained.
The goal of the Sports Commission is to demonstrate the quality of athletic facilities and people to organizers considering this area for their event.
