The Pennsylvania Department of Education has approved the request of the Butler Area School District to temporarily use Broad Street Elementary for Summit students until the water issues at Summit are resolved.
The district says building preparation and the transition of materials from Summit to Broad Street is underway. Summit teachers are reporting to work on Wednesday to help pack materials and supplies.
Butler Mayor Tom Donaldson said Tuesday afternoon that he expected Broad Street School to reopen on Monday.
The Broad Street building in the City of Butler was last used during the 2014-2015 school year. It, along with several other elementary schools, was then closed as part of the district’s consolidation plan.
Deputy Education Director Casey Smith with the Department of Education said his department is also willing to work with the district to ensure that all required days of instruction are provided to students. At the end of this week, Summit Elementary students will have missed six days of classes due to the discovery of lead in the drinking water. E. Coli was then discovered in the raw well water coming into the school.
