Several thousand people near Slippery Rock lost power for a brief moment Thursday night thanks to a beaver.
West Penn Power Spokesman Todd Meyers said the beaver chewed through a large tree that was threatening to topple onto power lines.
The damaged tree was spotted during a routine helicopter inspection earlier Thursday, so crews alerted residents about the need to shut off power briefly to cut the tree down.
“That’s why we do these inspections,” Meyers said. “To be proactive and avoid a much longer outage.”
Meyers said the outage about 8:15 p.m. affected close to 10,000 customers, including Slippery Rock University, but only lasted a few seconds.
