A fisherman attempting to ice fish at Moraine State Park’s Lake Arthur on Monday fell through the ice and died.
Park Manager Dustin Drew said emergency crews were called to the eastern side of the park– near the Rt. 528 boat launch– about 10 a.m. after another park visitor called 911 after seeing the man fall through the ice.
About three hours later, the body of 71-year-old Pierre Niesen Jr. of Pittsburgh was pulled from the lake by a dive team.
Officials say the water where the man fell in was about 8 feet deep and 32 degrees, and the ice was roughly three inches deep.
According to Drew, that is not thick enough to safely support a person.
