The Butler YMCA is reaffirming their commitment to guest safety after a teen brought a gun into the facility earlier this week.
The 13-year-old boy- who officials say was a YMCA member– reportedly brought a loaded handgun and showed another boy while the two were in one of the facility’s gyms. The boy that was shown the gun immediately told a YMCA employee, who then notified police. No one was hurt.
Butler YMCA President and CEO Dave Hilliard praised his staff for following the correct procedures.
“We are thankful that the other teenager reported what he saw in the gym,” Hilliard said in a statement. “Our staff followed our established procedures and immediately called the police, who responded to the call within minutes.”
He also noted the facility’s surveillance system was recently updated with additional cameras which provide a broader view of the public areas.
“The safety of our members, staff and guests is one of our highest priorities,“ he said. “This new surveillance system has enabled us to have additional cameras and provides a broader view of our public areas.”
