Top county officials continue to mull the idea of the county owning and operating its own morgue.
Currently, Butler County has an agreement with the privately-owned Young Funeral Home in Butler, who has been providing mortuary services to the county for decades. The county commissioners signed another agreement Thursday with Young that will run through 2020.
But, the board says they’re continuing to analyze data and look at the county’s other options.
“Looking into 2019, I think it’s something we need to sit down together and do some thoughtful and strategic planning in addressing the morgue issue,” Commissioner Kim Geyer said during a meeting Thursday.
Commissioner Kevin Boozel noted there’s been a lot of data-gathering already, “on the numbers, the volume and the size. Some of that preliminary work has been in the works.”
There is a clause in the county’s most-recent contract with Young’s that dictates either party can exit the agreement if six months notice is given.
