Four former Butler BlueSox–Pavin Parks, Connor Coward, Derek West, and Austin Ross–were selected in the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft on Wednesday.
Parks (Kent State) was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 24th round. Parks was a two-way player for the Sox in 2017, appearing in 45 games as a hitter with a .520 OBP and was 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA over 40.2 innings on the mound. He appeared in 25 games for Butler in 2016 as well.
He threw a complete game with eight runs, with just a single earned run allowed, in the first game of last year’s championship series.
Coward (Virginia Tech) was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 26th round. He was one of the best pitchers in the Sox’ history, with a 2.96 ERA over 30 innings in 2017 and a 2.22 ERA over 56.2 innings in 2016.
Derek West (University of Pittsburgh) went in the 28th round to the Atlanta Braves. West made nine appearances for Butler last summer, with a 2.03 ERA. He threw four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in the playoffs.
Austin Ross (Radford) was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 35th round. He was Butler’s closer in 2014, racking up nine saves in 23 appearances. He struck out 44 hitters in just 36 innings as a freshman. Ross was an All-Star with his 1.36 ERA.
The quartet brings the Sox total to 26 players drafted in franchise history.
