The Butler BlueSox are leaving the Prospect League.
The club announced the move on Sunday- calling it a “difficult decision to make.”
The Sox have been in the Prospect League for 10 years and was the easternmost town in the group. The BlueSox had the most travel of any of the current 11 teams.
The team’s ownership group said Sunday that Butler is one of the smallest markets in the league and it has become “economically impractical” for the current ownership to continue in the same direction. The group went on to say they will make every effort to keep amateur baseball here in Butler.
“Our intent is to seek membership in a different, but competitively comparable summer collegiate wooden bat league operated by the current ownership group or one comprised of new owners,” the letter from the Butler BlueSox Baseball Organization read.
The Sox are coming of its worst season yet in the Prospect League, going 21-39, and closing the year on a nine-game losing streak.
“We truly appreciate the overwhelming support of our dedicated fans and loyal sponsors over the past 10 years,” the letter said.
The Butler BlueSox play at Kelly Automotive Park, formerly Pullman Park, in the city of Butler.
