A sickly looking black bear that had been wandering around the Kittanning area was captured over the weekend and euthanized.
Pennsylvania Game Commission officers say the adult female bear had lost 25 to 35 percent of its body weight and the majority of its hair due to an advanced case of mange. It was trapped on Friday. Officers determined euthanizing the bear was the most humane way to end the animal’s suffering.
Officials say the bear wouldn’t have suffered the rest of the winter and also, it can be a hazard to people and pets to let a sick bear roam. Mange can be spread to animals and humans.
