A new bill aims to provide sustainable funding to the 9-8-8 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
The State House of Representatives passed the bill that would add a six cent per month surcharge to cell phones to support the lifeline.
Democrat State Representative Stephen Kinsey explains the importance of the 9-8-8 line.
“The goal of the 9-8-8 Lifeline is to provide immediate assistance and support to any and all residents of this Commonwealth. Whether you live in a rural, urban, or suburban community, this line is established to help save lives here in Pennsylvania,” Kinsey said.
The vote wasn’t unanimous, with opponents concerned about an increase in cell phone taxes.
The bill now moves to the State Senate.
