The state House Transportation Committee approved a bill Monday that would require convicted first-time drunken drivers to purchase an ignition interlock as part of their sentence.
The measure will now head to the full House of Representatives for consideration.
State crime data show there were about 46,000 DUI arrests in Pennsylvania in 2015. It’s not known how many of those were first-time offenders.
Under current law, the device, which requires the driver to use a breathalyzer before operating, is only required for second and subsequent offenses.
