State lawmakers are working on bringing back a program that pays for the development of healthy food retailers in low to moderate income areas.
After narrowly passing the house by a vote of 112 to 91, House Bill 764, intends to bring back the Fresh Food Financing Initiative.
The program was cut in 2010. Advocates say it provides grants for construction, rehabilitation, expansion of grocery stores, farmers markets, and other healthy food retailers in low to moderate income areas.
Areas that can often be referred to as food deserts.
Lawmakers say bring this program back can help those who suffer from hunger and malnourishment while improving the quality of produce and promoting local agriculture products.
