PennDOT is planning to eliminate vehicle registration stickers next year but a group of legislators and law enforcement officials are saying not too fast.
A bill has been introduced to continue the stickers and has already been approved by the House and is pending in the Senate.
Supporters of the stickers say they are a safety measure for police officers and the public because they verify that a vehicle is registered. Unregistered vehicles can cause officers to stop a vehicle and make them wary because the driver also may not have insurance or have other violations or criminal charges pending.
PennDOT’s goal is to use the money saved by not printing and mailing the sticks to establish a grant program to help local police departments buy camera systems for police cars that would read the license plate on each vehicle they pass.
