With young children now eligible for a COVID vaccination, Butler Health System’s infectious disease director is offering reassurance about the safety of the shot.
Dr. John Love says that he understands why some parents are hesitant, but urges them to talk with their child’s doctor about the process.
“This is basically the same vaccine that the adults have been getting, just at a reduced dose. It generates the same type of immune response,” Love said. “I think it’s natural to have questions, but that’s really why our message has been to please talk to your children’s doctors and providers about your questions about this.”
“We want you to have good conversations with them. They know your children, they know you, and they’re the ones that are going to take care of you over time.”
Love says the COVID vaccination is the latest in a trend of parents who are ignoring routine vaccinations for their children.
“In the last couple of decades there has been increased resistance into vaccinating children. Some of it stems from the very clearly debunked concerns about autism related to the MMR vaccine. The study that has put this out originally has been rescinded and been disproven. But, there’s been this vocal subpopulation that has just refused to accept science,” Love said.
The Butler Health System is administering the Moderna COVID vaccine for children 6 months to 6-year-old. More scheduling info can be found on their website.
