The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board approved nine new applications Wednesday permitting gas stations to sell six-packs of beer.
Currently, the Liquor Code forbids licenses at places where gasoline is sold. But Gov. Tom Wolf, who sent a letter asking the board to grant the licenses, pointed to a recent court decision allowing the sales – if the points of sale are separate.
“It’s been the PLCB’s position for a number of years that we have the authority to issue liquor licenses to businesses that also engage in other business, and businesses that engage in gasoline sales so long as the area that we license for alcohol sales is separate and distinct from where fuel sales happen,” Elizabeth Brassell, Director of Communications for the PLCB said.
In other words, separate cash registers.
The current code is aimed at cutting down on competition with the state stores and drunk driving.
None of the businesses gaining approval are in Butler County. The closest is in Gibsonia, Allegheny County.
