The Butler County commissioners will vote next week on raising the bed tax.
The proposed increase from 2 percent to 5 five percent is expected to bring in an additional $600,000 into the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau.
A bed tax is placed on any lodging that has bedding and water service. Cabins and university housing (used for alternative purposes during the summer and winter breaks) will be taxable for the first time. Mobile campers will not be taxed.
Tourism Bureau President Jack Cohen said the increase will not primarily affect Butler County residents, it will affect visitors coming into the county.
Commissioner Board Chairman Leslie Osche said hotel operators agreed to the increase as long as their businesses were promoted through marketing, which is what the tourism bureau will do.
“They want additional marketing services,” Osche said.
The state passed a new law earlier this year allowing counties to raise the bed tax up to 5 percent. If approved next week, the increase would take effect in Butler County in August.
