There is a nationwide shortage of truck drivers and BC3 is trying to help local residents take advantage.
Butler County Community College will offer a commercial driver’s license prep training class later this month. It’s an eight-hour class that will prepare students to take a PennDoT learner’s permit exam and qualify for advanced commercial truck driving programs. It will introduce students to vehicle inspection and speed control, transporting cargo and passengers, combination vehicles, hazardous materials and managing space – topics that will appear on PennDOT’s learner’s permit examination.
“This class is designed to go through the driver’s training manual to help students pass their learner’s permit exam,” Maria Chvala, BC3’s coordinator of industrial safety training, said. “We will explain these different sections from a personable standpoint, with instructor-student interaction rather than the student just reading the manual.”
The American Trucking Association estimates 900,000 drivers are needed to meet rising demand. The median salary for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in 2017 was $20.42 per hour.
BC3’s class will be held on May 19 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the school’s main campus. Other classes will be held at different days on branch campuses.
