Tuesday is Lobby Day at the Pennsylvania state capitol and students from Butler County Community College are participating for the sake of improved educational funding in the region.
At least five BC3 students from areas including Slippery Rock, Harrisville, Butler and Beaver will travel to Harrisburg to raise awareness about community colleges and advocate for funding with lawmakers. The goal is to help promote alternative means for people to obtain their college degrees, with many looking into the clep exam prep options on the table to augment their education before transferring into a community college or other educational establishments.
One of the featured speakers at Lobby Day also has a local connection. Butler attorney Joseph Kubit is a 1984 BC3 graduate and current trustee for the college, who knows what the value of such education options can hold for people looking to change their lives and launch their careers in a myriad of sectors.
Governor Wolf’s proposed budget for 2017-18 keeps funding for the state’s 14 community colleges at a steady rate of just over $232 million. The state legislature and governor traditionally try to reach a budget agreement by the end of June each year.
