It’s been years since Butler County Community College has won a men or women’s basketball conference championship. This weekend they won two.
BC3 men’s basketball won the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Sunday afternoon at the BC3 Fieldhouse with a 96-84 victory over Penn Highlands.
Less than 24 hours before that, the BC3 women’s team won their conference title with a 62-43 win at Pitt Titusville.
During the course of the weekend, the Pioneers also had a 20 year old scoring record broken when sophomore and Butler High grad Joel Stutz became the all-time leading scorer in BC3 history with 1,345 points.
“I can’t thank my teammates and coaches enough,” Stutz said. “It’s pretty special to have my name recognized with All-Americans and great players who have come through here.”
Head Coach Dick Hartung said it’s extremely difficult to score that many points in two years.
“As the two years went on, I thought, ‘my gosh, he has a chance,” Hartung said. “He can shoot, he’s patient, and has teammates that can also shoot—so teams can’t isolate.”
Stutz had 29 points in Sunday’s win. Knoch grad Josh Knochel had 21 and Joel’s brother Jace had 14.
BC3’s Makenzie Craig broke the all-time women’s scoring record earlier this year, and scored 15 points in Saturday’s win—bringing her career total to 1,267 points.
Both BC3 teams will play in the Region XX tournament this weekend in Anne Arundel, Maryland. The men play at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and the women at noon Sunday.
