The Butler Area School District has suspended a recently-created policy that staff members should administer the anti-overdose drug Naloxone.
By a 5-4 vote by the school board, the policy- that was enacted in December- was suspended Monday night pending further review and consideration.
Superintendent Dr. Dale Lumley commented that after initially being in favor of the policy, he now had concerns about the safety of nurses who would be administering the Naloxone to people experiencing an overdose of an opioid drug.
The policy would have allowed the district to apply for grant funding to cover part or all of the costs to have Naloxone at secondary schools, but that application has now been suspended as well.
