The Butler Area School District is considering all alternatives to deal with the popularity of their Latin language program.
Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools Dr. Brian Slamecka told the school board Monday night that a total of 43 students failed to get placed in Latin 2, 3, or 4 due to a shortage of teachers and class size limits.
The district currently employs two Latin teachers who plan to teach the subject a total of 12 sessions during the upcoming school year. However, the program continues to grow and the amount of interest in the program cannot be handled with current staffing.
Dr. Slamecka is going to get more information about the number of eighth graders currently enrolled in Latin 1 and if it would be possible to add more higher level classes if the younger students were transitioned elsewhere.
