The Butler Area School District is entering into a partnership with Special Olympics for a program that will bring together students with disabilities and those without.
The district and Special Olympics will team up to form two Interscholastic Unified Sports Bocce teams. Butler has long supported independent participation in Special Olympics but this is the first time in recent memory that a larger program like this has been started.
From December through March, two teams of eight students each will practice twice a week. About half the students will be disabled and the others will not. The teams will then participate in three events, including one hosted by Butler and one at Slippery Rock University.
Uniforms will be provided by Special Olympics and coaches will be provided by SRU. About 120 schools across the state have similar teams and nine in our region are getting teams organized like Butler is doing.
