Making decisions about Butler Area School District students attending class in the aftermath of last week’s storm came down to gathering information in a timely manner.
“We really did not have too many decisions to make, as much as it was waiting to find out information in a timely manner,” Superintendent Dr. Brian White said in an interview Monday. “It was more about making decisions once we found out information about what could operate and not operate. With the Intermediate High School in particular being down, our transportation of the secondary schools is so complicated and so intertwined between the Senior High School and the Intermediate High School. Having school was just not feasible.”
The Senior High and Intermediate did not have power fully restored until Sunday, while Summit and Center Township elementary schools did not get service back up until Monday afternoon.
As a result, classes were cancelled on both Friday and Monday but, according to White, there is a good chance students will not have to make those days up depending on how the rest of the winter season progresses.
“I drafted a letter and I’ve already called the Pennsylvania Department of Education Division of School Services asking for a waiver of the 180 day school requirement,” White said. “We have the hours necessary to meet the state hour requirement so if we could get the days waived off, it would not be a student makeup day.”
As a result of the outage, the district had to throw away some milk, and pay overtime to facilities and maintenance people who were responsible for monitoring the buildings and cleaning up damaged trees.
