For the first time, the Butler Area School District will start their new school year today with a full-day kindergarten program in place.
Superintendent Dr. Brian White says research shows full-day kindergarten benefits students both academically and socially.
Every elementary school in the district will offer full-day kindergarten. The district says class sizes will vary, but shifting to a full-day program will not significantly impact class size.
Due to some shifting and adjusting, the district did not have to hire any additional teachers to accommodate full-day kindergarten.
White said about 6,400 students were enrolled to start this school year. That’s roughly 50 more students than last year.
