Pennsylvania’s Auditor General says the Pennsylvania Turnpike continues to face significant challenges to meet financial obligations.
Tim DeFoor released a performance audit yesterday making three findings and 23 recommendations for improvements including two for the state legislature.
“The biggest takeaway from this audit is that the Turnpike Commission did not get into this situation itself. The legislature and the executive branch need to work together to ensure that the Turnpike is financially viable for the future,” DeFoor said.
The first finding was that annual toll increases place an undue burden on Turnpike travelers. The second finding was that nearly $105 million in Turnpike revenue remains uncollected. The third finding involved outdated anti-discrimination language in contracts for service plaza vendors.
This audit began June 1, 2018 and continued through June 13, 2022. The full audit report can be read on the PA Auditor website.
