Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement official is alerting residents about potential unemployment scams as well as reminding gyms about legal responsibilities to members.
According to PA Attorney General Josh Shapiro, scammers are trying to take advantage of the historic rise in unemployment with fake unemployment filing websites in order to steal personal information. Those filing for unemployment should only do so through the PA Department of Labor and Industry. All other websites claiming to be a way to file should be reported to the Office of the Attorney General.
Shapiro also called on all facilities that provide health club services to stop billing members while those facilities are shut down and to freeze charges on accounts at no additional fee to members. Under the Health Club Act, a health club or gym that is closed for more than 30 days is obligated to provide refunds upon receiving a notice of intent to cancel. Many gyms already meet or exceed these requirements.
