Monday is the third full day of competition at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil & there are a handful of athletes with local ties to our area that are helping Team USA start the games off strong.
Ginny Thrasher, who is a student at West Virginia University, won the first gold medal of the entire Olympic Games on Saturday morning. She competed and won the 10 meter air rifle event.
Meghan Klingenberg, who attended Pine-Richland High School, helped the USA Women’s Soccer team score in the second half in a 1-0 match against France.
Hopewell High School’s Christa Dietzen and Team USA Volleyball dominated over Puerto Rico over the weekend.
Lauren Crandall, born in Pittsburgh, and nine other Pennsylvania natives brought Team USA Field Hockey to victory while playing Argentina on Saturday.
Events slated for tonight include Beach Volleyball, Handball, Tennis and Swimming, with most decorated Olympian in history Michael Phelps set to race in the semifinals of the 200 meter butterfly at 9 p.m.
