Gerrit Cole allowed five earned runs on seven hits over five innings. His record fell to 7-9, while his ERA climbed to 3.55. The Pirates were outscored despite outhitting the Astros 11-7. They left nine men on base. Gregory Polanco drove in two runs. Jordy Mercer hit his 9th home run of the season.
The Pirates fell to 3-1/2 games back in the Wild Card race. They open a four-game series in Milwaukee tonight. First pitch is 8:10pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am will be 7:45pm. Chad Kuhl (3-1, 3.62 ERA) will start for the Pirates. The Brewers have won nine home games in a row against the Bucs.
