As the weather continues to get colder, now is the perfect time to make sure your home is protected from the dangerous effects of carbon monoxide.
“It’s caused by incomplete combustion of any fuel that might be in the home…gas, fuel oils, those kind of things. Other appliances as well, other than a furnace, like a water heater or a gas range could produce that. We’ve also seen vehicles in attached garages especially will promote that,” Michael Whitmeyer, who is a manager with Schneider One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning in Butler, told our newsroom.
The gas is colorless and odorless and a buildup can be deadly.
Having a functioning carbon monoxide detector can make a difference in being able to catch a potential problem in time.
According to Schneider’s owner Gary Schneider, having a detector with a battery backup is important to consider when buying a unit.
“The battery backup is so important because a lot of the incidents of carbon monoxide can occur when the electric goes out because you have portable generators, portable space heaters, and some people think I’ll heat my home with my oven. That’s very dangerous. So all those things that people do to get heat going whenever there’s no electric…that’s when that carbon monoxide detector is most important.”
If you already have a carbon monoxide detector, fall is a good time to test that it is still functioning properly as they usually last for about seven years.
