Authorities believe someone intentionally started a fire early Tuesday that destroyed nearly $1,000 worth of hay bales on a Concord Township farm.
Firefighters were called to a remote area of the farm on McKinney Road about 5:30 a.m. after the farm owner smelled and noticed smoke.
Chief of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department Reid Campbell said 20 large, round bales of hay were on fire. The bales were close to the road and firefighters noticed footprints and tire tracks in the area.
“We found vehicle tracks and footprints in the area and up to the bales,” Campbell said. “It was evident someone was there and it was intentionally set.”
Campbell says this isn’t the first time something like this has happened.
“A few years ago we had incidents of someone going around and setting hay bales on fire that were close to the roadway,” he said. “We haven’t had that happen for awhile but it seems it may be starting again.”
An arson investigation is underway by state police.
