The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-4 last night in the opening game of a four-game series at PNC Park. The Bucs led 4-1 into the seventh inning before Arizona exploded for seven runs. Musgrove left after two batters in the seventh. Reliever Kyle Crick took the loss. He allowed four earned runs in 2/3rds of an inning. Nick Burdi allowed five earned runs after taking over for Crick.
The two teams play again tonight at 7:05pm. Hear the game on WISR beginning at 6:40pm. Trevor Williams is the starter for the Bucs tonight. The Pirates have fallen into a first-place tie with St. Louis. The Cardinals defeated Milwaukee 13-5 last night.
The Pirates lost reliever Nick Burdi, who crumpled to the mound with an arm injury after releasing a pitch in the eighth inning. Burdi made the club out of spring training, after he had returned from Tommy John surgery.
The Pirates saw the return of outfielder Gregory Polanco last night from a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum after an awkward slide into second base last September. Polanco had two hits including a double last night. The Pirates sent pitcher Steven Brault to Indianapolis to make room for Polanco.
