After an off-day Thursday, the Pittsburgh Pirates are back at it tonight as they take on the St. Louis Cardinals. Newly acquired Chris Archer will make his Pirates debut tonight. He will wear number 24. John Gant (3-4, 3.49 ERA) will get the start for the Cardinals. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Coverage begins on WISR 680 AM at 6:40 p.m.
The Chicago Cubs lost last night, so the Pirates currently sit 6.5 games out of first place in the NL Central. The Brewers meanwhile were annihilated by the Dodgers 21-5 but with an Atlanta Braves win, the Pirates remain four games out of the second spot in the NL Wild Card.
Pirates reliever Felipe Vazquez was named the National League’s Reliever of the Month. Vazquez recorded eight saves in July and only allowed two earned runs. In over just 12 innings of work, Vazquez also recorded 22 strikeouts and walked only three.
