It’s a scenario we’ve experienced several times since the start of 2018: wake up, see snow and hear about school delays and cancellations.
Light snow started falling late Monday afternoon and it continued to fall– off and on– throughout the overnight. Many woke up Tuesday morning to between 2-3 inches of additional snow on the ground. Some areas saw more.
PennDOT had a full crew of 40 trucks out overnight, working to plow the roadways and keep them passable. On Tuesday morning, many of the main roads were just wet but several side and residential streets were largely snow-covered.
That forced four of the nine public school districts in Butler County to close for the day. Butler, Karns City, Moniteau and Slippery Rock took a snow-day. A-C Valley, Freeports, Mars, Seneca Valley and South Butler operated on a two-hour delay schedule.
Some community activities were also cancelled. All Butler County Senior Centers are closed and there will be no Butler Meals On Wheels delivery.
After today, our focus will shift from the snow to the cold. Tonight, temperatures will drop near zero and we’ll struggle to get out of the teens on Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service, lights snow is expected through Tuesday afternoon. Some areas of Butler County could see an additional snow accumulation of 1-2 inches.
