The American League defeated the National League 4-2 last night in the Major League Baseball All-Star game played in San Diego. It was the 4th consecutive victory for the American League. The victory also means the American League team to reach the World Series will now have home-field advantage. Both Pittsburgh Pirates attending the game saw action. Outfielder Starling Marte had a single during his only at-bat of the game in the eighth inning. Reliever Mark Melancon pitched 1/3rd of an inning. He walked a batter in relief of Chicago Cubs starter Jon Lester, and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam.
Prior to the game, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred announced the league’s batting titles would be re-named after Rod Carew and Tony Gwynn.
Relief pitcher Rob Scahill was claimed off waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. Scahill was with the Pirates the past two seasons.
The Pirates are going to lose left-handed pitcher Nick Lodolo whom they selected with the 41st pick in the recent amateur draft. Lodolo is going to honor his commitment to TCU. They will receive the 42nd overall pick next year. Will Craig, the Pirates first-round pick in this year’s draft, is batting .175 through 81 plate appearances in Single-A Morgantown.
