Pirates pitching prospect Roansy Contreras was moved into Baseball America’s Top 100 players list. The list now includes five Pirates prospects. Only San Diego, Toronto and Miami have more. Contreras will start for the Altoona Curve tonight against Hartford. He is 3-1 this season with a 2.00 ERA. He has walked just nine batters and struck out 64 in 45 innings.
Vanderbilt defeated Mississippi State 8-2 last night in Game 1 of the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Jack Leiter was the winning pitcher, who was given a solid lead when the Commodores scored seven runs in the first inning. The win moves Vanderbilt within one victory of a second national championship in a row. Leiter, who is expected to be one of the top picks in the July MLB draft, allowed two runs on three hits over six innings. He struck out eight.
