Starting this weekend, all three volunteer fire departments in Butler Township will be dispatched to emergencies at once.
This is a precursor to what will be coming in early 2019 when the three departments will merge to form one- known as the Butler Township Volunteer Fire District.
Internally, Butler Township Manager Tom Knights says logistics are still being worked out. There are currently three volunteer fire departments in the township that are dispatched separately- Butler Township Fire District Station 3, Mercer Road and South Butler.
There used to be five different township volunteer departments, but a consolidation took places years ago.
All firefighters in Butler Township will soon be under a new chief, who will also oversee the paid Butler City Fire Department. Chris Switala was named joint fire chief for both Butler Township and Butler City earlier this fall.
