Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement official is encouraging residents to take precautions as scammers continue to try to trick consumers.
According to Attorney General Dave Sunday, one such ploy involves using PayPal to send repeated email invoices. The messages often contain a toll-free number to call which connects to a scammer attempting to obtain personal information. Those receiving an invoice like this are advised to check the email address and ignore if the payment being requested is not recognized.
Another complaint that the AG has been dealing with recently involves online romance scams, also called catfishing. Scammers will often target social media accounts to learn personal information about potential victims before contacting them and requesting money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Before pursuing a relationship online, residents should be wary of inconsistencies on history or contact info.
Anyone who believes that they may have been a victim of scams like these is asked to contact the Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.
