Thursday begins the official travel period for the July 4th holiday.
Despite the high gas prices, AAA is predicting travel will rival pre-pandemic highs.
An estimated 47.9 million people will be traveling over 50 miles from their house this holiday weekend—and perhaps the biggest surprise is that 42 million will be driving to get to their destination.
In the Mid-Atlantic region the number of travelers is estimated around 6.2 million.
AAA says the peak travel time today is in between 2-8 p.m. Friday however is expected to be the biggest travel day, especially between noon and 9 p.m.
