AAA says they have responded to an increasing number of drivers this year who have run out of gas on the road.
During the month of March, the travel agency handled more than 1,000 calls for drivers who were stranded after running out of gas.
Officials believe higher gas prices are one of the reasons why drivers are waiting till the tanks hit empty to fill up.
However, they say that is dangerous and can cause damage to their vehicles. AAA recommends drivers filling up whenever they hit a quarter of tank.
