Have an old car seat?
AAA will host a ‘Car Seat Roundup’ on Thursday to collect expired, damaged and unwanted car seats for proper disposal.
The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the AAA Butler Branch Office on Clearview Circle near the Clearview Mall in Center Township.
Officials say a lot of unsafe car seats are bought and sold at garage sales, given as hand-me-downs or given to charities for re-sale. AAA hopes to combat that by holding events like this one.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for all children, according to AAA. Child safety seats reduce the risk of injury by 71-82 percent, and the risk of death by 28 percent in comparison to children in seat belts alone. Booster seats reduce the risk of nonfatal injuries by 45 percent among 4-8 year-olds. When these car seats are reused, it can compromise a child’s safety in the event of a crash. Additionally, 3 out of 4 car seats are installed incorrectly.
