We now know more information surrounding the 37 charges a Center Township couple is facing for allegedly stealing more than $1 million from Butler Health System.
Scott and Stephanie Roskovski, 50 and 48, were taken into custody Friday.
Federal officials have charged the couple with a list of infractions – including embezzlement from a health care benefit program, money laundering and mail fraud.
In the 30-page grand jury indictment, prosecutors detailed how the money was stolen. About a half-of-million dollars was taken via a Butler Health System corporate Visa card; another $490,000 were falsified check requests; and another $300,000 came from direct vendor checks issued by Butler Memorial Hospital. The money was used for vacations, concerts, home improvements and expenses at their 72-acre motocross complex, Switchback MX, on Route 8 near Slippery Rock, according to investigators.
The couple, who appeared Friday in U.S. District Court for a short hearing, could face a sentence of more than 30 years in prison, a fine of $2.6 million, or both. During the short hearing Friday, the Roskovskis had their legs shackled. They were then released from custody after posting bail.
U.S. Attorney Scott Brady said in a news release Friday that the couple acted together between 2011 and 2017 to defraud the Butler Health System. Stephanie Roskovski joined Butler Health System in 1994 as director of Community Health Planning. She was ultimately appointed as the health system’s chief operating officer in 2012, and held the position until being fired in August 2017.
Scott Roskovski was a detective in the Butler County District Attorney’s Office for 20 years. He was fired in 2018 when the DA’s office learned of the investigation against the couple. Scott is also the owner of Switchback MX in Clay Township.
