Following the Slippery Rock University football team’s 56-21 victory over California Saturday, The Rock has climbed back into the national top-25 of the American Football Coaches Association poll this week at number 20. The Rock had been as high as 14th this season, but fell out of the top-25 following their three point loss to Seton Hill in week four. The Rock remains the second highest ranked Super Region One team behind number-9 ranked Shepherd as the only teams in the top-25.
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has two other teams receiving votes this week, and both are fromt the Western Division and still on The Rock’s schedule. Clarion and IUP both have received votes for the first time this season, but remain outside the top-25. The Rock will visit Mercyhurts this Saturday, then Host IUP next Saturday night, October 24th. Clarion will visit Slippery Rock November 7th.
Slippery Rock University sophomore distance runner Jeremy Parsons (Titusville, Pa./Maplewood) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week in an announcement from the league office Monday. Parsons earns his first weekly honor of the year on the heels of winning the Mack Cooper Invitational hosted on The Rock’s home course at Cooper’s Lake Campground last weekend. He covered the 8,000-meter challenging course in 25:56 to top a field of 109 runners. A total of 10 complete teams took part in the invitational, including two nationally ranked squads in No. 9 Lock Haven and No. 13 Shippensburg. Parsons has been Slippery Rock’s top finisher in each meet he has competed in so far this season. The Rock will rest this weekend before hosting the PSAC Championships Oct. 24 at Cooper’s Lake.
