The Butler Township commissioners are considering entering into a contract with a company that would allow them to provide information to residents through a smart phone app.
Following a discussion about the idea, the commissioners postponed entering into an agreement at this time but plan to investigate and compare several companies that provide the service.
Apps like Savvy Citizen and Code Red allow municipalities to share messages on a variety of topics directly with residents- including emergency weather alerts, law enforcement warnings and activities.
Residents can download the app and access the information for free, but the municipality would pay a monthly fee to send the messages. The fee for Savvy Citizen is based on the population of the township and works out to be $249 per month no matter how many residents download the app and access the information.
